They were fleeing religious persecution in England. Many of his fellow first settlers of Pennsylvania were also Quakers, as members of the Religious Society of Friends are still known. Penn arrived in America in 1682, dreaming of freedom and profits. At the top stands a far more famous monument to one of Butler’s fellow Quakers: William Penn, the founder of the city and of the state that bears his family name. The behemoth municipal complex rises up from the middle of the boulevard, its limestone-and-granite tower soaring 548 feet into the sky.
